Day 3 the wind is much stronger at 9-14m/s. Many pilots got sub-forty. We all beat our previous day PBs.

Unfortunately, after two rounds of contest, the fog were gradually built up and was too low to fly. The contest was called off at 2:00pm. So TR2010 is over with 12 round flown.

Winds are up, very good wind and fast times. average wind speeds 5-7m/s. The HongKong and Taiwan pilots performed very well as they fly mainly in these kind of conditions, we were not familiar, never the less, we all clock our best times.

Day 1

We started very early due to the huge number of competitors, left the hotel at 7am. Another climb up the mountain, starting to feel the effect of yesterday's climb.

After all the setup, pilot briefing, a lucky draw was held to pick the first pilot to start the race. Lucky 21.

The conditions was quite bad throughout the day, marginal 3-5m/s, with winds blowing off direction most of the time, totally different from practice day and caught many pilots off. 50s, 60s were common. A total of 5 rounds were ran.

Our team did fairly well, Jon and Francis flew their just maidened Cyrils , with Francis the first one to break the sub 60. Our timing gradually got better and better as we got more use to the conditions and our planes. In the last round, well timed turns enabled Pang's Strega to get the fastest time of the day with a 45.72s run.

End of day 1 our positions were as follows :

Practice day today, we left for the competition site early in the morning. It was deja vu again as we had to climb up the mountain to the flying site. Quite a tough climb 30mins up with 2 pit stops along the way.

Not much of a view from up the flying site as it was very foggy, wind was good at the start and slowed down towards the afternoon.

We all took turns to have our practice runs, Unfortunately during one of the practice, Francis' predator had a mid air with HK Stanley's FS3. Besides that all was good, Dennis had to trim out his radio, Jon and Francis sucessfully maidened their Cyrils.

Jonathan enjoys flying different kinds of airplanes from edf, 3D planes, nitros, still his heart lies with gliders. Thermal hunting at BR with high speed low passes are one of his favourites, it will be his first overseas competition at TR HK 2010. He will be bringing his Cyril, predator and Vento.

Francis has been a radio control fan for a long time. Previously he was racing cars, now he is racing F3F!. As a slope franatic, he has too many gliders to count. A precision machinist by trade, his gliders' build and setup have always been very clean and precise prob due to his nature of work. It will be his first race in the coming TR in hongkong, watch out for his Skorpion and predator.

This year's typhoon race will be held at Hongkong Oct 8-10. Overwhelming responses from pilots around the region making the organisers to cap the number of entrants to 60. Its going to be a tough and exciting race! More detaila here.

The last day of the race was called off after 2 attempts due to poor winds and rain. We headed back to the hotel for the closing ceremony and banquet.

Results

In the end after a total of 8 round, the top 3 position were swept by the Taiwaness while the SMP team from Hongkong took the top team and Stanley Chan from HongKong won the best speed with a time of 32.75.

As for our team, our final positions are as follows :

Pang - 16th
Syming - 27th
Dennis - 26th
Weiyao - 22th

We accomplished what we came to do, by being here in Jeju to compete was a achievement in itself, considering the fact that we have no proper slope to even fly F3F. This race is a start and i hope it will continue in the future with more SG pilots joining us next year.

We hope the friendships we made with pilots from HK,Taiwan and Korea will continue to grow as this trip was not just about the race, it was a meet up with people around the region with similar passion.

Day 2 competition

We enter day 2 of the competition today and the conditions were totally opposite of yesterday's weak winds. Today was truely what a F3F race should be like, howling winds great slope.

At one point the anemometer was maxed out at 30 knots.

Due to the strong winds there were many casualties, not just our team but the rest as well.

Dennis' vento and transmitted was hit early by a taiwaness plane on landing. Weiyao 's vento I lost control and crashed badly , almost totaled. Syming' mini blade wack the ground on a high speed run, my javelin's horizontal fin ripped on a landing. We managed to do some on field repairs and get going again. Well this was the kind of conditions that we came for, and it was worth it.

We managed to get better times today. All of us managed to go sub60s, a few of our runs went sub 50s!

Today's condition was very unpredictable, the winds came in gust. The slope was also not too good as the wind was blowing on the convex part and the sides does not have very good lift.

As usual our day started off with a team breakfast. This time is at the nearby ramen store.

The Hongkong team and Taiwan team arrived subsequently and we head off for lunch together before going to the competition site.

Lunch was stew beef soup.

This was the volcano we have to conquer today. Its over 150meter high and a 20mins climb up.

Practice - Good winds today, it was free flight for all teams. We took turns to go up and did some practice. It was really an eye opener for us as we saw top class planes piloted by top class pilots.

Tomorrow is D day, we headed back to have a early rest.

Practice day1

We started the day with breakfast at a small coffee place before heading to the flying site which was 1 hour's drive away. We were told there were 3 main flying sites in Jeju, depending on wind direction.
The flying site was one of the many volcanoes on jeju island. Luckily for us, we could drive up all the way to the top. The view from the top was beautiful.

After a short site survey, we quickly proceed to assemble our planes.

The wind condition was fairly light and smooth, measured 3~5m/s. We took turns to test our our planes at the slope and shared the airspace with a few paragliders. The landing was fairly ok, coming in from the right side just like in bedok, only thing was the zone was littered with volcanic rocks, so had to be careful not to hit them on landing. Dennis was first with his vento, followed by the rest of us.

As for the two new planes that were suppose to maiden, Siming 's mini blade had c.g off and it tip stalled heading down the deep slope. It scared us a few seconds, luckily it was retrivable. Weiyao' new vento had binding aileron wipers so maiden was delayed.

After a short lunch however the wind died down and changed direction, wind was then blowing from the back. We waited awhile before we decided to shift over to the other side to try. A long walk and climb up we found the paragliders were already there. Although the wind was now better and more consistant, we could not fly as the other side was all covered with trees, no space to land.

We then decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel.

Dinner was at a small cosy resturant. Hope there is better wind tomorrow.

Arrival Jeju

After a few flights and transfers we finally landed in Jeju!. The weather in Jeju is superb, cooling with sunshine. We were greeted by our kind Korean host who first bought us to lunch. The pipping hot Korean beef soup was divine in the cold weather.

After that we checked into the hotel.View was great, room was big, spacious and clean. Too tired after the long travel , we KOed and rested for awhile before heading out for our groceries supplies and dinner.

Dinner was a sumptuous Korean BBQ at the restaurant just near our hotel. We washed down the meal with some Shoju.

We walk around the hotel for awhile before retiring to rest early as we will be heading to the slope for practice tomorrow morning.

Hey guys!

As promised, here are some pre-travel packing pics.
My 2 Ventos are stowed in the stock plane bags, which are then packed into the red glider carrier.
This is for the sake of easy transportation since everything is strapped together.

In addition, the glider carrier has backpack like straps, so hiking with the gear should be lots easier.

With the box and all packing materials, total weight seems to be about 12kg+.
Pretty darn heavy, but hopefully the box is strong enough, and the packing sufficient.

Anyway, will do final checks before the box is sealed for cargo, if anybody has any packings tips, do drop us a note.

Made a box out of corroplas to fit both the Vento and Miniblade. Total weight around 10.5Kg. Kind of heavy. Hope we don't kana overweight charge.

Pang, Wei Yao, Sy Ming and our team manager Chew will be traveling by Cathay Pacific and schedule to depart around 6pm. They will transit in Hong Kong for an hour and be on their way to Incheon. From Incheon, they will take a train to Gimpo for their connection to Jeju.

For me, I will be on SQ departing at 12 midnight for a direct flight to Incheon. I will also get on the train to Gimpo for my connection to Jeju. The guys will be waiting for me in Jeju airport. If I don't get lost.

Hi guys, I am Pang, the one who was crazy enough to form this inaugural F3F SG team to korea.

A little bit about myself, I graduated from the National University of Singapore with a 1st Class Honours degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Technopreneurship. Previously i was working in Ministry of Defense as a specialist in the area of Information Technology Security. Before that i was also a researcher with Singapore’s DSO National Laboratories. In 2009, I decided to follow my passion and channeled my energy and ideas into Soaring Composites and Heli guru. I also have a personal blog at mazonrc.blogspot.com

I fly a range of RC aircrafts, helis, airplanes and gliders. It was through the slope that got me into RC, one day i was jogging at the reservoir behind in the picture and saw some aircrafts flying, when i went up the slope i was amazed at how they could fly without any form of propulsion. This got me interested and the rest is history.

My hope for the team is to go there have fun, gain experience and make friends with other slope pilots around the region.

This would be the first time I am taking part in a regional F3f competition. I have been flying RC for over 25 years. I only started slope gliders about 4 years ago. Never in my wildest dreams I could imagine gliders will take me to different part of the world to fly. Like Weiyao said, here in Singapore, we only have 1 slope site and even that, we have to wait for the right season to fly.

Some of the place I have flown are in Malaysia (Tanjong Sedili) and Thailand (Phuket).

Thought i would do a formal introduction on myself from the team.

My name is Lu Weiyao, aka Pitch Black to some.
I have been actively involved in the local RC scene for a good 7 years now.
My area expertise range from competitive fixed wing aircraft, to rotary wing platforms.
I fly whatever i can get my hands on!

With a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, i have designed, fabricated and assembled multiple advanced UAV platforms.
I am also currently doing Aviation related projects on a commercial basis.

Slope Soaring has always been a huge draw for me. From my 1st ever sailplane, the Spirit 2m, i've slowly evolved the fleet into what i have now.
These range from tiny slope buzzers, to large scale sailplanes.
The 09 Korean open would be my 1st competitive sailplane event outside Singapore. And i intend to stay in the competitive arena as long as the funds allow. Its in the blood!

Anyway, enough on that, watch out for my upcoming posts regarding my competition gear, reviews, and other nonsense regarding everything RC.

Cost of going overseas to compete is not cheap. The tentative budget to Korea looks like this :

Flight tickets :
SG to Seoul via Cathay - $555
Seoul to Jeju via Asiana air - $175
Hotel :
$140 per room per nite for twin sharing. 6 nites - (6x140)/2 = $420
Registration and banquet - USD70 ~ SGD $110

555+175+420+110 = $1260 per person, thats excluding meals and other expenditure.

Team F3F Singapore is formed to take part in the upcoming Typhoon race in Korea.

We fly slope in Singapore during the monsoon season from Dec til around March at the Bedok Reservoir Slope. It is our only slope in Singapore and it is very gentle so the lift is not very strong. That being so, a few of us are interested to take part in the coming F3F race to gain experience in racing. We hope to go there and do our best as well as make friends with fellow slope pilots from the region.
